The Fields
The growing of arable crops is one of the largest branches of agriculture on Kfar Masaryk. 2,250 acres are farmed as well as some extra land that is rented from nearby kibbutzim. The main crops grown are - cotton, corn, tomatoes, beans, peanuts, paprika and wheat. The amounts of each crop grown varies from year to year depending on the expected financial return. The team consists of about 20 workers, made up of kibbutz members, outside workers, students (young kibbutzniks who are studying at college or university and who work part-time) and youngsters still at school who also work part-time. The team is considered one of the best and most professional in the Western Galilee area and has many times won the annual "Excellence in Growing" prize. The team are also very capable engineers and if a machine doesn't exist to do a particular job - they make it themselves! They have designed and manufactured all manner of field implements including - cultivators, a machine to lay irrigation pipe, a paprika harvester and a cotton pressing machine that produces a huge bale of harvested cotton ready for transportation. The fields branch is always thinking of the future and trying to develop their system of working and improving their equipment. They are also exporting their expertise by undertaking contract work for neighbouring landowners. They are conscious of their place in the kibbutz tradition and maintain a strong relationship with the youngsters of the kibbutz thus instilling in them a connection with the agricultural aspect of kibbutz life.
